Conflicted; size issues

Quick post, we're off to the park soon (weird fall weather here in Michigan). I'm at about 17 sts. in my gusset (supposed to go to 22 or 23, I think) and it looks like I'm already at my heel. I've never done toe-up, so I don't know how the heel is going to be. It also feels a bit loose across the top of my instep (crease of my ankle, whassat called? lol). Should I keep plugging away with the next 6 or so rows, or try to mod it somehow? I have shrimpy size 5 feet... TIA!

From the look, I'd say you can start the heel turn.

But for the learning curve, I'd suggest you put the lifeline in now and keep on increasing to see what happens. Then you can frog back to the lifeline if it turns way too big and then you'll have learned what to look for the next time. ;-)

I like Elemm's idea of the lifeline - that way it's tentative committment:) It looks great so far - first toe-ups? Nothing like jumping off the deep end:)
Good luck!

What is a lifeline?

I'd turn the heel, but I had to frog mine back to beginning cause I did the full pattern repeat.
A lifeline is when you run a thin thread (dental floss is the most commonly recommended) through a row so that if you frog back to it, you don't loose any stitches

The colorway you have chosen is lovely! and I like those fun knit markers too! Hmmm, it is hard to tell from a photo. If you were to stand up in the sock, does it still look like you are ready for the heel turn? And it also depends on how snug you like to wear your socks. I definately like the idea of a life line, no matter what you decide. Good luck.

Thanks for all the advice! I've been sitting on this for a couple days trying to decide what to do; dunno why I didn't post earlier. I'll put in a lifeline & try it on after every couple rows, then start the heel.

Question; did ya'll get the proper fit when you knit it exactly to the pattern? If I knit this for my HSS pal I would hate for it to not fit. Theoretically she does have the proper sized feet, though.

You're probably on the mark to use a lifeline, but I'd advise you try to do the heel sooner rather than later.

I did the same last week and had no problem at all following the directions and moving into leg band portion of the sock. At this point the pattern is pretty simple. It just meant I had less stitches to pick up/bind off with the back of the heel.

I followed pattern, everything fits fine, except it is a bit loose around the foot for me. But I don't really mind that. My guage may have just been off a tad. I have a thin foot running about a size 8.
