I'm A Total W&T RETREAD!!!

Okay, I had to express my frustration with the whole wrap and turn thing. It's driving me crazy. I'm okay with wrap and turn as a concept, but recognizing a wrap and turn on the purl side with a multicolor yarn is making me batty. Plus, my purling the stitch with its wrap looks awful. Eeeek. I've ripped my first sock back twice now and I'm putting it down so that I can up my worsted EZ EPS raglan. Ahhhhh. Stockinette. I'm going to try again but I think I'm going to try a solid yarn. Any other sufferers out there? Am I the only short bus student?

Ok, you've got me confused. If I remember right you only wrap and turn on the heel turn, right? Then you pick up those wrapped stitches in the knit direction. Not on the purl side. Right? What did I miss?

There are also w & t's on the toe.

I can also get confused with these sometimes, so I always refer to Interweave Knits magazine. They have a pretty clear short-row (aka "wrap and turn") explanation in the back of the mag in the glossary. Hope this helps!

Yep, they're both in the toes (which is only as far as I got) and the heels. It's not the actual w&t. I can do that til the cows come home. It's the knitting (and, in my case, the purling) with the wrap that's giving me trouble. I get a little confused with the wraps and the purl bumps. With the addition of varying colors, I get even more turned around. I should probably try a solid color.

Mike, I'm totally with you. I have knit my toe about 8 times!! I hate it. And I need to do it a ninth time but haven't had the courage to face it.

I think I'm going to go ahead and do a Judy's Magic Cast-On that I saw in Cat Bordhi's new book. In fact, I saw a GREAT description of wraps, and how to knit them in this book. I will be using it as a guide!!!

This was my first toe up try and I fumbled with it a great deal. My sock has been on hold for two weeks, I think, and I'm thinking of starting over altogether.

You're not alone.

Wendy from Wendy Knits gives a great description of the wrapped toe here too - just in case:)

About half way down the page. I e-mailed Wendy herself when I was "running behind the short bus" and she referenced this for me:) I was totally freaking baffled about these wraps and doubles wraps - I pull it out every time I do a toe-up now. whew!

I vote for going with Judy's magic cast on. So much easier and at least for me, cleaner looking.

The w&t is makimng me crazy. If I start another toe, I will have to "get" it in the heel though, right?
